National and Cultural Imagining: Forty-Five Years of Multiculturalism
15 October, 2016
University of Tartu, Estonia
On October 8, 1971, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau announced multiculturalism as Canada’s official government policy. The conference seeks to explore the impact of this event on Canadian society, culture and imagination. Whether and how have the implications of embracing Canada’s multicultural dimension changed over the forty-five years?
Speakers from Canada, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia will present their papers on various topics dealing with aspects of Canadian society and culture. These include: the theory and practice of multiculturalism, its history and controversies; the works of Canadian authors of diverse backgrounds and writing strategies addressing a wide range of issues; approaches to language; and, politicians and politics.
