Department of Romance Studies
Romance languages and cultures have for centuries played a central role in European cultural history. Studying French or Spanish is thus essential to anybody who wants to understand the intellectual and political roots of today’s world, its history and traditions as well as issues of intercultural communication. Our department is a good match for students for whom knowing a language means more than just coping in everyday communication and who want to know Romance cultures and literatures in depth.
The main areas of research of the department are French and Spanish literature, theatre studies, comparative linguistics, translation studies and discourse analysis. In addition to the local teaching staff, you will meet many visiting scholars. The department has visiting lecturers who are native speakers of French and Spanish. The department also has an excellent track record in international mobility, as students are eager to use the opportunity of spending a semester or whole academic year at universities in France or Spain.
