Open call for a visiting lecturer in Norwegian language and culture

Institution:  University of Tartu College of Foreign Languages and Cultures Department of Scandinavian Studies
Location: Tartu, Estonia
Period of employment: 1/9/2019-31/08/2022*
The position is co-financed by the EEA/Norway grants within the Baltic Research Programme

*Maximum period of financing within the current project support, flexibility for shorter periods of employment can be negotiated.

Tasks:

The lecturer’s task is to prepare and carry out practical language courses for students learning Norwegian as a foreign language (from beginner to advanced levels, intensive and, if needed, regular twice a week courses), lectures and seminars on Norwegian culture and society. The lecturer is also responsible for and has the right to prepare and carry out respective exams for the courses delivered. The tasks will primarily include teaching the students majoring in the field both on BA and MA study levels (the future Norwegian philologists), but also those who study Norwegian as their minor or as an elective course. The tasks will also include supervising, reviewing and evaluating BA and MA theses. Given the qualification of the lecturer, the opportunity for supervising or reviewing PhD theses is also available. In addition, lecturers are encouraged to do research and popularize their area of teaching through public events (e.g. open lectures, seminars, conferences, workshops etc.).

Required qualification and experience:

  • MA degree (at least) or equivalent qualification
  • Candidates specialised in teaching Norwegian as a foreign language or Norwegian linguistics are preferred; however, candidates with other educational backgrounds are also welcome to apply.
  • A good candidate has former teaching experience, preferably in a higher education establishment; yet candidates who have recently completed their teacher training degree (with practical training in a classroom) are also welcome to apply.
  • Excellent command of Norwegian, very good command of English

Communication in the department takes mainly place in Scandinavian languages, but good English skills are necessary for communication with students from other departments and at the university in general. Acquiring knowledge of Estonian is recommended for easier integration but it is not a prerequisite for the work. Estonian language courses are offered free of charge for all international staff members throughout their employment, providing them with the opportunity to progress in their language skills step-by-step each semester.

Requirements for application:

  • CV in English (preferred form: https://www.ut.ee/en/curriculum-vitae, can be modified)
  • References from former employers and/or supervisors
  • Motivation letter
  • Copies of diplomas and certificates proving the level of education
  • Other materials considered relevant by the applicant

Applications of the visiting lecturers should be submitted by 28 May 2019 latest via e-mail kertu.niilus [ät] ut.ee

Candidates who have reached the second round will be contacted before the 1st of June for an interview (can also be done via Skype, if necessary).

Salary and contract:

The net salary is approximately 2000 eur per month (all taxes deduced).

The university will sign an employment contract with the visiting lecturer. With the social taxes the university pays as the employer, the visiting lecturer will automatically be guaranteed the standard local health insurance. The visiting lecturer can, but is not obliged to take on Estonian tax residency. Any counselling needed in terms of residency, taxes and other necessary documentation will be provided prior and upon arrival to Estonia.

Workload:

The full-time weekly workload in Estonia is 40 astronomic hours; however, the workload for lectures and seminars are calculated in academic hours (1 academic hour = 45 minutes). As studies at the University of Tartu are research based, the lecturer is also expected to be engaged in some research. The exact percentage of the work depends largely on the other tasks the lecturer undertakes.

In general the percentages form as follows:

-    teaching (seminars/lectures) - (about 70% of the total workload) on average 12 academic hours per week per semester and any planning and development work needed for delivering the courses (incl. preparing courses, giving feedback, providing consultations to students if necessary, engaging in general curriculum development work)

-    supervising student theses (about 5 %)

-    research (about 20%)

-    administrative work and popularising one’s speciality (about 5 %) (incl. participating in the work of admissions and theses defence committees, meetings held at the structural unit).

The amount and ways of measuring the outcomes of the final 3 can be negotiated depending on the needs during the planned period (semester or whole year). E.g. if there are more student theses to supervise, the lecturer is not expected to do as much research. The courses are opened on a semester basis, but the workload is usually planned keeping at least 1 academic year in mind, because eventually the staff’s workload is overseen on a year’s basis.

The exact number of groups and hours taught depends on the distribution of courses. The academic hours of seminars and lecture courses are strongly linked to the amount of credit points (ECTS) given for the courses. For example, a regular lecture course takes place once a week (2 academic hours) and usually amounts to 3 ECTS. An intensive language course is 12 ECTS which is divided onto 4 days of the week - 1 meeting lasting 2 academic hours. Thus, while the lecturer is delivering a 12 ECTS (8 academic hours per week) intensive language course, they can, for example, additionally be assigned 2 lecture courses (3 ECTS each). The approximate number of students (depending on the course) is usually between 15-25 for practical language courses and seminars, lecture courses may have more students.

Semesters at the University of Tartu:

Autumn: September (nearest Monday to the 1st of September) – January

Holiday: First week of February

Spring: Second week of February – 22 of June

Holiday: 23 of June – August

The exact holiday period is agreed with the head of the department and the director of the college depending on the work in exam and admission committees, conferences etc; the maximum number of vacation days per year is 56 days.

Housing:

Housing is to be found by the lecturer. The best time for finding rentable apartments in Tartu is summer. Currently, a well-furnished flat (1 bed-room) in the areas of Tartu closer to the town central range between approx. 400-500 euros per months (communal costs for water and heating may be included or added, depending on the flat). If needed, assistance can be provided by the department. The department can also help pre-book a room at the university dormitory or recommend similar options for short-term housing, before the lecturer decides on a more permanent solution. A wide variety and descriptions in English are available on online real-estate pages such as www.kv.ee and www.city24.ee

Kursene varer i ett semester, men arbeidsbelastningen planlegges for hele året.
