The University of Tartu has been organising Estonian intensive courses for Erasmus students since 2010.
This short course provides students with a basic knowledge of grammatical structures, written and spoken language. The aim of the course is to teach the basics of Estonian grammar and vocabulary and at the same time provide international students with an opportunity to integrate with each other, with the Estonian culture and local social networks.
The course contributes to a more successful mobility period in Estonia as the acquired knowledge helps students to obtain further knowledge of the region and the people. It also strengthens networking between Erasmus students studying in Estonia which helps with associating more with the Erasmus programme and promoting the programme among their fellow students either back home or in Estonia.
The location of the course, Tartu, has also some significance for those incoming students who will spend their Erasmus semester in Tallinn. It supports one relatively crucial aspect of mobility, namely gaining a regional perception of the hosting country and experiencing the diversity that Estonia has to offer.
