Department of English Studies
Today many people think that they speak English, the global lingua franca. But speaking some English is not the same as being fluent in the language and knowing its nuances. The Department of English Studies provides students with an in-depth understanding of the English language and the cultures of the English-speaking world. Coursework in the English language, literatures written in English and cultures of the English-speaking world are combined with skills of critical reading, analytical writing and intercultural communication.
The department is a vibrant research and teaching community. Its primary areas of research are literatures written in English (British, American, Canadian), foreign language acquisition, learner corpora, translation studies, discourse studies and lexicography.
The graduates can enter traditional professions in the humanities as well as any field that requires excellent English language and intercultural communication skills. Our department has been the launching pad for many legendary teachers, translators and writers, but also diplomats, entrepreneurs and government officials. Our graduates become cultural mediators between their own country and the rest of the world.
