Department of Classical Studies
Classical Studies covers the study of ancient languages – Latin and Ancient Greek – and, through them, the study of different aspects of ancient cultures (literature, philosophy, daily life, art, history). Classical languages were taught at the University of Tartu when it was first opened in the 17th century and today’s department carries on these venerable traditions.
The department is an important research centre in Classical Studies. Its main areas of research are Neo-Latin literature and humanism in the Baltic Sea region, classical languages and poetry in the history of the University of Tartu, ancient verse and poetics, digital humanities (compilation of different databases).
In addition to Estonian faculty members, students meet visiting professors from leading international universities and also get the opportunity to go on study trips to sites important in the classical world. Students are also involved in the research and translation projects of the department.
